Consulate General of India

Hambantota


Background:  The Consulate General of India in Hambantota was inaugurated by Hon’ble Minister of External Affairs, Shri S.M. Krishna, on 28 November, 2010. Prof. G.L. Peiris, Minister of External Affairs, Sri Lanka, Mrs Kumari Balasuriya, Governor of Southern Province, Sri Lanka, Smt. Nirupama Rao, Foreign Secretary of India and Shri Ashok K. Kantha, High Commissioner of India, were present on the occasion.

 

Consular Jurisdiction: The consular jurisdiction of the Consulate covers the districts of Hambantota, Matara, Galle (Southern Province) and Moneragala (Uwa Province).  The Consulate will provide visas and other consular services to people from all these districts.  In addition, the consulate will also facilitate educational, cultural and trade interaction of people from these districts with people in India. 

 

Visa Services: The Consulate has been providing visa services since 10 January, 2011. Visa applicants have to fill up the application on-line at www.indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/,  then take a print out of the on-line application and then lodge it at the Consulate with two photographs and necessary fees.  Additional documents may be required depending on the type of visa required.  Visa applications are accepted at the Consulate on every working day between 10 am to 12.30 am and visas are issued next day between 4 pm and 5 pm.

 

Cultural Programmes organized by the Consulate General of India, Hambantota in Southern province in 2012

  • More than 50 Digital Paintings of Tagore were displayed at Mahanaga Hall, Hambantota on 5-7 January 2012.  The paintings were sent by Indian Council for Cultural Relations, New Delhi on the occasion of 150th birth centenary celebrations of Rabindra Nath Tagore.
  • A Kathak Dance performance by Ms Aditi Mangaldas and her troupe was organized in conjunction with Galle Literary Festival at Galle on 21 January 2012.
  • The Consulate organized a Kathak dance show on 9th June, 2012 at the Hambantota Navodaya 2012 Industrial & Trade Exhibition organized by the Hambantota District Chamber of Commerce & Industry at Ambalantota.  The dance troupe was led by Mrs. M.M. Sarasooriya, dance teacher at the Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo and her students.
  • Popular Hindi Movie ‘Bodyguard’ starring Salman Khan was screened in Consulate’s premises for the local community on 28 July 2012. More than 150 persons enjoyed the movie show.
  • On the occasion of Independence Day of India (15th August), the Consulate organized a Kathak performance by visiting Indian cultural troupe led by            Dr. Kanak Rele at Singapore Hall in Hambantota. More than 600 people witnessed the performance
  • The Consulate organized the exposition of holy ‘Kapilvastu Relics’ for public at Walgama, Matara from 2-4 September 2012. The Relics were also exhibited at Rajamaha Viharaya Temple, Tissamaharama for public from 5-8 September 2012. A total of more than 11 lakh visitors were able to have a glimpse of the Holy Relics at both the venues.
  • Popular Hindi Movie ‘Don 2’ starring Shahrukh Khan was screened in Consulate’s premises for the local community on 27 September 2012.  More than150 persons enjoyed the movie show.

  Consul General

The Consul General is Shri R.Raghunathan.  Before assuming his post as Consul General in Hambantota he has served at Indian Missisons in Brussels, Moscow, Dhaka, Ottawa, Kuala Lumpur and Bahrain.
